Juno Calypso

Juno Calypso is presented at TJ.Boulting in the Curiosa sector at the occasion of Paris Photo from the 9 to the 13th of November 2022

The British artist Juno Calypso takes a half-autobiographical, half-fantastical approach to her performative, carefully-staged works exploring representations of the female figure. The resulting images are ecstatically glossy, rose-toned self-portraits that Calypso has described as a “personal investigation of the self.” In this newest body of work, the artist explores her sensual and mysterious aesthetic in the purest and most formal of means. Working alone in the studio, she extracts the composition of the female form, the framing of it, the textures, and the colours of pink that encompass it. The photographs are devoid of any context. In the absence of the kind of socio-cultural references common in her earlier works, focus falls on the sensuality of the figure, the flesh, the deep purple fruit that bleeds and stains the fabric and skin. This palette is sanguinary, visceral, and vulnerable. Calypso’s body effaces her identity and becomes the female body writ large, a shape, a form, with no location or environment. The artist explores the female nude in line with a tradition, as well as in terms of her own photographic practice. But, as is the artist’s way, she never surrenders fully to what might be expected.
